Kanpur, India – A driver claiming to be behind the wheel of a Lamborghini involved in a high-speed crash that injured six people in Kanpur on Sunday has presented an affidavit to a local court, contradicting police assertions that the vehicle was driven by Shivam Mishra, son of prominent tobacco businessman KK Mishra. The claim, made by Mohan Lal, emerged Tuesday as investigators faced resistance accessing the Mishra family residence, according to reports.
Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal confirmed that the First Information Report (FIR) had been updated to name Shivam Mishra as an accused, following an investigation based on CCTV footage and eyewitness testimony. “We will shortly file a charge sheet against Mishra. There will be no laxity,” Lal stated.
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon on VIP Road when the Lamborghini Revuelto, reportedly valued at ₹12 crore (approximately $1.45 million USD), veered onto the pavement, striking pedestrians and damaging vehicles. Taufiq Ahmed, a resident of Chamanganj, sustained serious leg injuries, while Vishal and Sonu Tripathi, two motorcycle riders, were too hurt. An auto-rickshaw and a parked motorcycle suffered significant damage.
KK Mishra, owner of Banshidhar Exports Pvt Ltd, a company supplying raw tobacco to gutkha and pan masala manufacturers, reached the Gwaltoli police station Tuesday after being summoned. He maintained his son’s innocence, alleging that Shivam experienced a sudden medical episode while the vehicle was being driven by Mohan Lal. Mishra claimed security personnel broke the car window to extract the driver and then his son, who had lost consciousness. He further alleged that footage selectively circulated to the media focused only on Shivam’s removal from the vehicle, omitting images of the driver being assisted.
“The driver was driving the car…my son is being framed,” Mishra told reporters. His lawyer, Dharmendra Singh, corroborated the claim, stating that Mohan Lal had submitted an affidavit to the court detailing the events. According to the affidavit, a tempo collided with the Lamborghini after Shivam felt dizzy. Singh also confirmed that Shivam is currently receiving medical treatment in Delhi.
Banshidhar Exports Pvt Ltd has previously been subject to scrutiny by authorities. In 2024, the Income Tax Department conducted raids at multiple premises linked to the business across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, investigating discrepancies between declared income and estimated turnover as reported by Republic World. During those raids, luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Phantom, McLaren, Porsche, and Lamborghini, were seized from Shivam Mishra’s Delhi residence, along with cash.
The police investigation continues, with authorities analyzing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. The conflicting narratives from the driver, the businessman, and the police raise questions about the circumstances surrounding the crash and the extent of the Mishra family’s involvement. The case remains open, with a charge sheet pending and the investigation ongoing.
