Lagos Government Boosts School Safety and Health Measures for 2026/2027 Session

September 12, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Lagos State Government has implemented enhanced safety, health, and security protocols across public educational institutions ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session. Directed by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the mandate requires statewide compliance checks, improved sanitation facilities, and heightened vigilance from all school stakeholders as pupils return to classrooms.

Public primary and secondary schools across the state are scheduled to resume classes on Monday, according to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). In addition, state-run model colleges are slated to resume operations on Sunday, prompting education officials to urge immediate cooperation from parents, teachers, and administrators to secure learning environments from day one.

Statewide Compliance Checks and Administrative Readiness

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education ordered immediate monitoring and inspection tours to evaluate institutional readiness. According to announcements obtained from the government’s official channels and reported by The Punch, specialized inspection teams are deploying across the state to assess physical infrastructure, environmental sanitation, and punctuality among staff and students.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Jamiu Alli-Balogun, via a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs Basirat Lawal, emphasized that safeguarding children requires a unified approach. School leaders have been instructed to maintain proper attendance records and initiate teaching activities immediately to prevent instructional delays.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, reiterated that regulatory compliance remains paramount.

Hygiene Protocols and Infrastructure Standards

Beyond structural safety, the Lagos State Government placed significant emphasis on health standards within school compounds. Commissioner Alli-Balogun directed school administrators to ensure functional water supply systems, proper sanitation facilities, and adequate hygiene stations are fully operational before students arrive.

The updated guidelines advise learners to practice rigorous personal hygiene. Students are instructed to wash their hands regularly, avoid littering, dispose of waste responsibly, and practice good respiratory hygiene. Furthermore, the directive asks schools to keep classrooms well-ventilated, sanitize frequently touched surfaces regularly, and discourage students from sharing personal items.

Security Awareness and Community Responsibility

The government called upon teachers, parents, and community members to treat student safety as a shared responsibility. Stakeholders are encouraged to promptly report any security threats, damaged infrastructure, or environmental hazards to appropriate authorities.

As the academic session gets underway, the success of these comprehensive measures depends entirely on the sustained cooperation of the entire Lagos school community, ensuring that educational environments remain secure, healthy, and conducive to academic excellence.
