Komoot & ChatGPT: Find Cycling Routes with AI | Bikerumor

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Komoot, a popular route-planning application for cyclists and hikers, has integrated ChatGPT functionality, allowing users to generate route suggestions through conversational prompts. The new feature, launched this week, enables users to request routes based on natural language queries, specifying parameters like distance, location, duration, and activity type, according to a statement from the company.

The integration streamlines the route discovery process by allowing users to initiate searches within the ChatGPT interface. By typing “@komoot” followed by their desired route criteria, users can receive curated recommendations drawn from Komoot’s database of over 7 million routes and 4 million community highlights. Selected routes can then be transferred directly to the Komoot application for offline navigation and further editing.

This partnership marks a novel application of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology within the outdoor activity planning sector. According to reports, the feature goes beyond Komoot’s standard filtering options, offering a more flexible and intuitive search experience. Users are able to specify preferences for the number and format of results they receive.

The launch has not been without controversy, however. Reports indicate that some users have expressed concerns about the integration of an AI tool into an application focused on experiencing nature, questioning the potential for technology to detract from the outdoor experience.

Komoot’s move follows a broader trend of integrating AI-powered tools into travel and outdoor recreation platforms. The company has not yet commented on how it will address user concerns or what future developments are planned for the ChatGPT integration.
