Korean Society of Nephrology Launches KHP 2033 Bulletin Board to Tackle Rising Kidney Disease Rates
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – the Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) has launched a new online bulletin board dedicated to its “National Kidney Health Advancement Plan 2033” (KHP 2033), aiming to increase openness and public engagement in the fight against chronic and terminal kidney disease. The initiative comes as the number of Koreans with chronic kidney disease has more than doubled in the last decade, currently estimated at around 4.6 million.
KHP 2033 focuses on three core goals: a 10% reduction in the overall number of chronic kidney disease patients, a 10% reduction in patients with terminal kidney disease caused by diabetes (currently the cause of 47% of all terminal kidney disease cases), and increasing the proportion of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplantation to 33%. The KSN aims to reduce the total number of chronic kidney disease patients to 4.14 million by 2033 and lower the percentage of diabetes-related terminal kidney disease to 42.3%.
A key component of the plan involves improving access to and support for home-based treatments. Currently, kidney transplantation accounts for only 16% of new kidney disease treatments, while peritoneal dialysis represents just 3.8%. The KSN emphasizes the importance of ensuring patients have choices aligned with their lifestyles and medical needs.
To achieve these goals, the Society is prioritizing prevention, early diagnosis, and the expansion of home treatment options, alongside establishing a strong policy foundation. This includes discussions on revitalizing multilayer dialysis and developing medical guidelines to improve chronic kidney disease management.
The new KHP 2033 bulletin board, accessible on the KSN website (https://ksn.or.kr/about/khp2033.php), will serve as a central hub for policy proposals, press releases, public education materials, and updates on the plan’s progress.
“The Korean Society of Nephrology will contribute to the establishment of a sustainable health care system with KHP 2033,” stated Chairman Park Hyung-cheon. “The society will gather opinions from the people through the KHP 2033 bulletin board and regularly update the progress.”
the KSN encourages public and medical community participation in the initiative to address what it recognizes as a serious public health concern and alleviate the socioeconomic burden of dialysis.
