Kia K4 1.0 T-GDI vs. Škoda Scala 1.0 TSI: The Clear Winner
Auto.cz has published a comparative test drive of the Kia K4 1.0 T-GDI 6MT and Škoda Scala 1.0 TSI 6MT, focusing on their driving dynamics, pricing, and real-world usability in the compact sedan segment.
The evaluation, conducted on public roads in the Czech Republic, highlights the Kia K4’s slightly sharper throttle response and more communicative steering, attributed to its 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 120 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque. The Škoda Scala, powered by an equivalent 1.0 TSI unit with identical output figures, demonstrated a more subdued power delivery but better noise insulation at cruising speeds.
Both vehicles feature six-speed manual transmissions, a rarity in today’s market dominated by automatics. The Kia’s gearshift was noted for its shorter throws and more precise engagement, while the Škoda’s clutch engagement point was described as higher and less intuitive for novice drivers.
In terms of interior space, the Škoda Scala offers marginally more rear legroom due to its longer wheelbase, though the Kia K4 compensates with a larger trunk capacity of 470 liters compared to the Škoda’s 467 liters. Both models approach equipped with similar infotainment systems featuring 8-inch touchscreens, smartphone integration, and basic driver assistance features.
Pricing for the base-spec Kia K4 1.0 T-GDI 6MT starts at 549,900 CZK, while the Škoda Scala 1.0 TSI 6MT is listed at 559,900 CZK in the Czech market. The price difference reflects variations in standard equipment, with the Kia including rear parking sensors and a wireless charging pad as standard, whereas the Škoda requires these as optional extras.
Fuel economy figures from the test indicate real-world consumption of approximately 5.8 liters per 100 km for the Kia K4 and 6.0 liters per 100 km for the Škoda Scala under mixed driving conditions, both figures closely matching their official WLTP ratings.
The test concludes that while neither vehicle represents a segment leader in performance or innovation, both offer competent, no-nonsense transportation with distinct character traits — the Kia leaning toward driver engagement, the Škoda toward refined comfort.
