Algerian Actor Faces Backlash After Collaboration wiht Moroccan Rapper, Sparking National Debate
Algiers, Algeria – Algerian actor Mohamed Khassani is at the center of a growing controversy following his appearance in a music video with Moroccan rapper Douzi.The collaboration has ignited a national debate concerning artistic freedom, ethics, and national identity within algeria’s cultural landscape, prompting a response from the Ministry of Culture and the Arts.
The controversy erupted after the release of the clip, prompting widespread criticism online and accusations of normalizing relations with a country with which Algeria has strained diplomatic ties. The case has quickly moved beyond Khassani’s individual actions, becoming a focal point for discussions about the responsibilities of artists and the boundaries of creative expression.
On August 31st, the Ministry of culture and the Arts issued a press release emphasizing that artistic freedom is not absolute. The Ministry stated it considers “the anchoring [of] noble professional values in the cultural and artistic environment as a strategic choice to develop the sector and enhance the Algerian cultural and artistic heritage.” The release, while not directly referencing Khassani or the specific controversy, announced forthcoming measures to reinforce ethical standards in artistic practice.
According to the Ministry,artistic freedom “can only flourish within the framework of the laws of the Republic,in accordance with the ethical charters which govern artistic practice,and in respect for the higher interest of the nation.” Minister Zouheir Bellalou has directed the National Council for Arts and Letters (CNAL) to expedite the creation of an artist’s ethics committee, tasked with ensuring adherence to legal and professional regulations within the cultural sector.
The situation has also revealed divisions within the Algerian artistic community. Several public figures have voiced their support for Khassani,including actor Abdelkader Djeriou,influencer Rifka,and actress Souhila Mallem. Mallem publicly declared her support,stating,”I support Mohamed Khassani,whether he is wrong or right… Those who criticize him are hateful and jealous!” She further added,”It was a tough week,and the opinions are divided,of course,but know that you have all my support,and that no one has the right to doubt your patriotism.”
The Khassani case underscores ongoing tensions surrounding cultural expression and national identity in Algeria, and the Ministry’s response signals a potential tightening of regulations surrounding artistic collaborations and content.
