Kenya Marks Anniversary of Bloody Protests Amid Police Roadblocks

June 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Kenyans blocked major roads in Nairobi on Tuesday as they commemorated the anniversary of violent protests that left at least 40 people dead, according to the Kenyan Red Cross. Police deployed additional officers to key intersections, citing security concerns, while government officials urged citizens to avoid gatherings. The protests, which erupted in August 2023 over proposed tax reforms, led to widespread unrest and prompted international condemnation.

Local media reported that road closures began before dawn, with traffic halted near the Uhuru Highway and along the Nairobi Expressway. A police spokesperson confirmed the measures, stating they were “to prevent potential disruptions and ensure public safety.” The Kenyan government has not publicly addressed the scale of the commemorations, but opposition leaders called for peaceful remembrance of the victims.

Human Rights Watch cited a Kenyan medical official who confirmed 42 fatalities during the initial protests, while the Red Cross reported treating over 1,200 injured. The discrepancy in numbers highlights challenges in verifying casualty counts during large-scale civil unrest. International observers, including the African Union, have called for independent investigations into the violence.

Opposition politician Njoki Wamai stated that the anniversary has reignited debates about government accountability. “The families of the victims deserve transparency, not silence,” she said in a public statement. Authorities have not commented on specific demands from protest organizers, who have urged the government to address systemic issues linked to the 2023 reforms.

As of Wednesday, police maintained a visible presence in central Nairobi, with no reports of large-scale demonstrations. The Kenyan Ministry of Interior issued a notice urging citizens to “respect the law and avoid actions that could compromise national security.” The government has not announced plans for official commemorations, leaving the event’s scope uncertain.
