Keep Berries Fresh Longer: Remove From Plastic, Use Vinegar & Paper Towels

March 24, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Irish households are being advised to immediately remove strawberries and blueberries from the plastic containers they are purchased in, to significantly extend the fruit’s shelf life and reduce food waste.

The recommendation, issued on Saturday, March 23, 2026, stems from the fact that plastic packaging traps moisture, creating an environment conducive to the growth of mold and bacteria. Berries naturally release moisture, and without adequate ventilation, this can lead to rapid deterioration, according to food preservation experts.

Danielle Walker, cookbook author and founder of Against All Grain, explained that a simple five-to-ten minute process can dramatically improve berry longevity. “It’s simple really: just give them a quick bath in a vinegar and water solution the moment you get them home, dry them, and place them in a clean container lined with paper towels,” she said.

The vinegar wash, utilizing either white or apple cider vinegar, acts as a natural antibacterial agent, eliminating existing mold spores. Paper towels absorb excess moisture and condensation, further inhibiting spoilage. Experts emphasize avoiding balsamic or red wine vinegars, as these can impart an undesirable taste to the fruit.

The process involves soaking the berries in a solution of cold water and two tablespoons of vinegar for between five and ten minutes. They should then be drained, thoroughly dried with paper towels, and stored in a clean container also lined with paper towels. Crucially, the container should not be sealed with a lid, allowing for continued air circulation.

According to Walker, this method can extend the freshness of berries to as long as ten days. The advice comes as households across the UK and Ireland are increasingly focused on reducing food waste and managing household expenses. A separate report from December 15, 2025, highlighted a simple five-second task Welsh households can undertake to improve home heating and reduce energy costs, demonstrating a broader trend of seeking small, impactful changes to daily routines.

While the focus is currently on berries, the principle of moisture control applies to other produce. The advice to avoid plastic and prioritize dryness is key to maximizing the shelf life of delicate fruits and vegetables. Replacing the paper towel lining when it becomes damp will further ensure optimal preservation.
