Katie Zacharia faces scrutiny over her US legal credentials

Katie Zacharia faces scrutiny over her US legal credentials

October 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Katie Zacharia, a 41-year-old conservative commentator, assumed office as the White House press secretary on October 9, 2026. Appointed by President Donald Trump, Zacharia immediately faced intense media scrutiny over her professional credentials regarding whether she holds a valid law license in the United States.

The White House Debut and Credentials Debate

Zacharia made her first appearance in the James Brady Press Briefing Room on October 13, 2026. The session lasted less than fifteen minutes, during which she took only three questions from pro-Trump media outlets. During the exchange, when a reporter asked President Trump in which state Zacharia had passed the bar exam, Trump turned to her, and she replied, “When I moved to China.” This response sparked immediate confusion and widespread questions regarding her professional background.

Investigations by outlets including CNN revealed that Zacharia had been introduced or referred to herself as a lawyer on multiple occasions, including at least 18 times as a paid commentator on Fox News since March 2025. While the University of Pepperdine confirmed that she graduated from its law school in 2011, possessing a law degree does not grant a license to practice law as an attorney in the United States.

Controversy over new White House press secretary Katie Zacharia's legal credentials

Zacharia Worked as a Consultant in Beijing

Following her graduation, Zacharia moved to Beijing, China, where her husband worked for an American private equity firm. Her LinkedIn profile and corporate records show she worked as an associate in the international practice group of the Beijing-based law firm Zhong Lun from 2011 to 2013. Chinese law dictates that only Chinese citizens can obtain a license to practice law in the country, meaning foreign employees at local firms fulfill non-attorney advisory or consulting roles.

Zacharia stated that she practiced international transactional law while abroad and maintained all appropriate credentials. She also asserted during a radio appearance that she served as an external legal advisor for the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank during her time in Asia. On October 14, 2026, the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability filed a formal complaint with the State Bar of California, requesting an investigation into whether Zacharia violated state laws by publicly holding herself out as a lawyer without a license.

Kalshi Investigates Suspicious Wagers on Zacharia Appointment

Beyond the questions surrounding her legal credentials, Zacharia’s appointment drew scrutiny in financial markets. The prediction market platform Kalshi opened an investigation into a series of small, precisely timed wagers placed just hours before Trump announced her selection, when her odds of securing the press secretary position were below one percent. The platform flagged these trades amid broader federal scrutiny over the misuse of non-public information in prediction markets.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended Zacharia, describing her as extremely intelligent and uniquely qualified to inform the public. Meanwhile, questions persist regarding whether any official state bar admitted her to practice, and neither the World Bank nor Zhong Lun have verified the specific scope of her past legal advisory roles abroad.
