Authorities have confirmed that no foul play is suspected in the incident, though investigators continue searching for the driver of a third vehicle involved in the collision.
Emergency Dispatch and Initial Impact on U.S. 169 Highway
The sequence of events began around 10 p.m. Sunday when a 911 caller reported a man standing in the middle of U.S. 169 Highway between Evening Star Road and Pleasant Valley Road in Osawatomie, Kansas. While the woman remained on the phone with dispatchers, a passing vehicle struck Thaxton. That first driver returned to the scene immediately. As the first Miami County deputy arrived shortly thereafter, a second vehicle struck the victim. That second driver temporarily left the scene before turning around to meet with law enforcement.
The Search for the Black Hyundai Tucson
Investigators determined that a third vehicle also struck the victim during the incident. Authorities believe the driver of this vehicle may be completely unaware that a collision occurred.
Law enforcement agencies are actively working to identify the driver of a black Hyundai Tucson equipped with black wheels. The vehicle was traveling northbound on U.S. 169 directly behind the second vehicle that struck Thaxton on Sunday night. Officials have asked anyone with information regarding this specific vehicle to contact the Miami County Sheriff’s Office at 913-294-3232 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
Responders Transport Thaxton to Hospital Where He Dies
Miami County deputies immediately administered lifesaving measures at the scene upon arrival. Emergency responders transported Thaxton to an area hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
