Kamala Harris Declines California Gubernatorial Race, Eyes Future White House Bid
Former American Vice President Kamala Harris has announced she will not seek the California governorship in the upcoming election. The decision, revealed through press statements, fuels speculation that Harris may be positioning herself for a presidential run in 2028.
“I have thoroughly considered whether to ask the people of California for the privilege to serve them as governor,” Harris stated. “I love this state, its people, and its potential. It is indeed my home. After deep reflection,I have decided not to run for governor in this election cycle.”
This move is expected to intensify discussions surrounding Harris’s political trajectory following her defeat alongside the Democratic presidential ticket in the November elections. Reports indicate that Harris has spent recent months weighing her options, including a potential return to the presidential race or a strategic withdrawal after the challenging loss.
Harris has not definitively ruled out a future presidential candidacy, having previously made unsuccessful bids in 2020 and 2024. She indicated in her statement that further details regarding her future plans would be shared in the coming months.
The current California Governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, who has held the office since 2019, is ineligible to run for re-election due to term limits. However, sources suggest Newsom might consider a presidential bid himself.
Several prominent Democrats have already declared their candidacies for the California governorship. These include Xavier Becerra, the current Secretary of Health and Human Services, former Representative Katie Porter, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
