John Ternus: Apple’s Next CEO? – Profile & Key Takeaways

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple’s hardware engineering chief, John Ternus, is increasingly viewed as the frontrunner to succeed Tim Cook as CEO, according to a detailed profile published today in Bloomberg Businessweek. The report, authored by long-time Apple analyst Mark Gurman, details Ternus’s rise within the company and suggests a deliberate effort by Apple to position him as Cook’s heir apparent.

While Cook, who turned 65 last year, has not publicly announced any retirement plans, the profile indicates he has not shared his intentions even with close colleagues. Cook, who became Apple CEO in 2011, recently stated he “can’t imagine life without Apple,” offering little clarity on his future with the company.

Ternus, 50, currently serves as senior vice president of hardware engineering, a role he assumed in 2021. Gurman’s reporting suggests that since taking on the position, Ternus has been instrumental in improving product quality and expanding Apple’s product lineup, with a focus on battery life, performance, and connectivity. He has overseen hardware development for the entire Apple portfolio, including iPads, iPhones, and AirPods, and played a key role in the transition to Apple Silicon for Macs.

The profile highlights a shift in Apple’s internal messaging, with the company’s public relations team actively increasing Ternus’s visibility. This includes a more prominent role in product introduction videos and interviews, signaling a potential gradual transition of power. Notably, Cook granted Ternus oversight of Apple’s design teams at the end of last year, further solidifying his position within the company.

The potential succession comes after the departure of several key Apple executives, including former chief operating officer Jeff Williams, who stepped down from operational responsibilities in July 2025 and is scheduled to leave the company by the end of this year. Williams had previously been considered a natural successor to Cook, but his departure has cleared the path for Ternus. Luca Maestri, Apple’s former CFO, has too recently left the company, adding to the leadership changes.

Gurman’s report notes that Ternus is “well-liked among Apple’s leadership” and credited with reversing a trend of declining product quality. The profile suggests that Ternus’s technical expertise and deep institutional knowledge create him a strong candidate to lead Apple in the future.

Apple reached a market valuation of nearly $4 trillion under Cook’s leadership, a period also marked by operational excellence and global expansion. Though, the company has faced criticism for a shift towards more incremental updates, raising questions about its ability to maintain its innovative edge, according to reports. The challenges facing the next CEO include navigating antitrust scrutiny and adapting to a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
