John Stamos and the California Sound to Replace The Beach Boys at EPCOT Following Mike Love Health Issues
Disney announced that John Stamos and an ensemble called the California Sound will replace The Beach Boys for upcoming performances at EPCOT’s International Food & Wine Festival on November 11th and 12th. The scheduling change arrives as 85-year-old Mike Love addresses ongoing health challenges that have recently forced the cancellation or postponement of multiple tour dates.
Love's Health Challenges Threaten Touring Operations
The concerts at EPCOT’s America Gardens Theatre were originally billed as appearances by The Beach Boys featuring Stamos, an actor who has performed with the group on and off for more than forty years. Yet, Love’s health struggles have thrown the band’s touring operations into question. Ahead of an October show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Stamos shared a joint Instagram post with Love detailing the situation. Stamos wrote that his mentor was facing serious health challenges, adding that while they hoped Love would be performing for years to come, the future remained uncertain.
Love addressed the Nashville crowd directly, acknowledging that he had been dealing with health issues for quite some time. Footage of Love performing while seated had previously circulated on social media, prompting fan concern. Despite urging from doctors, family, and friends to step back, Love insisted on returning to the stage, stating that he needed his band, audience, and crew to support him. A representative for The Beach Boys did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the EPCOT lineup change.
Licensing Rules Limit Touring Under Beach Boys Name
Love has held the exclusive license to tour under The Beach Boys name since 1998. Because of this legal framework, musicians who have spent years performing alongside him cannot continue touring under the historic banner without his direct involvement. Consequently, the California Sound moniker provides a potential template for keeping the group’s music live on stage if Love’s absence continues, though little has been disclosed about who will actually back Stamos during the Disney performances.
It remains unconfirmed whether the California Sound will serve as a permanent vehicle or simply consist of Love’s current touring musicians operating under a temporary banner. The Beach Boys still list other concert dates on their schedule, including performances at a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino location in November and a May 2027 booking at the River Cree Resort and Casino. Meanwhile, founding member Al Jardine continues to tour separately with the Pet Sounds Band alongside winter dates.
