John Oliver Slams Trump’s Iran War Claims & ‘Epic Fury’ Moniker

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

John Oliver criticized the Trump administration’s handling of escalating tensions with Iran on Sunday’s episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, focusing on what he characterized as increasingly detached-from-reality claims and a misleading public relations strategy.

Oliver’s commentary followed a recent press conference by United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, in which Hegseth directly addressed “the American people,” distinguishing them from “reporters” and “cable news spin.” According to Oliver, Hegseth’s approach felt disingenuous. “OK, set aside Hegseth’s whole vibe there — which is very ‘Welcome to my birthday dinner. One of you has been poisoned’ — You actually don’t need to announce who you are and aren’t speaking to,” Oliver said on his show.

The administration’s military operation in the region has been dubbed “Epic Fury,” a name Oliver ridiculed. “It’s definitely the stupidest name I’ve ever heard,” he stated. “It sounds like a VHS tape Hegseth put out of himself doing karate in a garage. It sounds like the name of an energy drink marketed to divorced monster-truck fans containing so much caffeine, it makes you shit your pants although having a heart attack.”

Oliver highlighted the economic impact of the operation, playing a clip of an interview with a woman at a gas station who had voted for President Trump three times. The woman expressed regret, stating, “That was my bad. Apparently I’m an idiot,” and directly criticizing the president as a “worthless pile of shit.”

The comedian then turned to President Trump’s assertions of victory in the conflict. Trump claimed on Friday that the U.S. Had “won the war,” stating, “Oh, I think we’ve won. We’ve knocked out their navy, their air force. We’ve knocked out their anti-aircraft, we’ve knocked out everything. We’re roaming free.”

Oliver challenged this narrative, pointing out the discrepancy between Trump’s claims and ongoing developments. “Oh, well that’s great news, but here is the problem with that. He already declared that we’d won the war 11 days ago. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it has seemed to continue since then,” Oliver said. He similarly noted a Pentagon request for $200 billion in additional funding for the operation, suggesting a prolonged engagement. Oliver further pointed to contradictory statements from the administration, including claims of destroying 100 percent of Iran’s military capability despite continued attacks in the region, and unsubstantiated claims of endorsements from former presidents.

“The lies are getting pretty flagrant here, even by this president’s standards, and inevitably people are noticing,” Oliver concluded, replaying the clip of the voter’s harsh criticism of the president.
