John Oliver Slams ATF Sting Operation & Exploitation of Disabled Man

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The tactics employed by law enforcement during undercover operations came under scrutiny Sunday night as John Oliver, host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” detailed what he characterized as questionable practices. Oliver’s segment focused on the increasing reliance on sting operations by police departments over the last four decades, highlighting instances where these operations have been criticized for potentially manufacturing crimes and disproportionately targeting vulnerable populations.

A particularly jarring example cited by Oliver involved a case conducted by agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Portland, Oregon. According to Oliver, the ATF agents established a fictitious smoke shop and recruited a 19-year-old man with intellectual disabilities, along with his friend, to promote the business. The recruitment involved paying both individuals to receive large neck tattoos of the shop’s logo – a giant squid smoking a joint.

Oliver expressed outrage at the situation, noting that a judge described the tactic as “not a good idea.” He sarcastically referenced Emily Post’s etiquette guide, claiming it advised a far more forceful response to such behavior. The segment brought renewed attention to the ethical concerns surrounding the apply of deceptive tactics by law enforcement.

The use of sting operations has been a growing trend in policing, as noted in a report by The Guardian, with Oliver’s show adding to the ongoing debate about their effectiveness and potential for abuse. The Guardian reported that Oliver argued these operations can “manufacture criminals” while still resulting in legitimate punishments.

A recent sting operation in Butler County, as reported by Dailymotion, resulted in felony drug charges for a man following a four-month investigation. Investigators orchestrated a purchase with suspected drug traffickers, seizing an amount of fentanyl described as capable of causing widespread fatalities. This case exemplifies the scale of some operations and the serious consequences they carry.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” airs Sundays on HBO, and is available on YouTube via the LastWeekTonight channel. The show’s examination of police stings adds to a growing body of criticism regarding the methods used by law enforcement and their impact on individuals and communities.
