Johannesburg Lions Lock Hyron Andrews Dies at 31
Johannesburg Lions lock Hyron Andrews died at the team hotel on the Île de Ré ahead of the club’s Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle. He was 31 years old.
Emergency Services Fail to Revive Fallen Lock Forward
Emergency services were called to the Atalante-Relais Thalasso hotel after the alarm was raised, but the player could not be revived. A statement issued by SA Rugby confirmed that the lock forward had passed away following an accident in which he fell.
Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, stated that the news was terrible and distressing, offering condolences to Andrews’ wife, Maighlin, along with his extended family, friends, and teammates. European Professional Club Rugby announced that a moment of silence will be held ahead of every Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup match over the weekend.
Career Journey from Durban to Manchester and Johannesburg
Born in Paarl and educated at Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria, Andrews represented the Junior Springboks in 2015. He later played for the KZN Sharks before moving to England in February 2024 to join Sale as injury cover for England international lock Jonny Hill, making 45 appearances for the club.
Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson described Andrews as a brilliant teammate who made a true second home in Manchester alongside his wife Maighlin and their two children, Hendrix and Emerson. Hyron was just a brilliant guy and a brilliant team-mate,
Sanderson said. He was so skilled on the field but off it, he was always someone you would want to have a beer with.
Sanderson added that the player was funny and charismatic in his own unique, dry way
and that the squad to a man, loved playing with him.
Andrews returned to South Africa during the summer to join the Johannesburg Lions, making his first start for his new team in a match against the Bulls. In an interview earlier this week, he noted, When the family is happy, you are happy and it shows when you go to work.

Parallels to Past European Fixture Tragedies
The sudden death on the eve of a European match occurs 10 years after the death of Munster coach Anthony Foley in Paris. Foley died in his sleep at age 42 on the night before a Champions Cup fixture against Racing 92 after a heart condition caused fluid to build up in his lungs.
The Lions had traveled to Europe following a 57-15 defeat by the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship. Despite the tragedy unfolding at their hotel base on the Île de Ré, the squad chose to fulfill the fixture against La Rochelle at the Stade Marcel Deflandre in honor of their late teammate.
