Joe Defeats Donell Jones in Verzuz R&B Nights Battle Featuring 50 Cent and 702

August 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Joe and Donell Jones brought nearly three decades of R&B catalog history to the Los Angeles stage on August 20, 2026, for the latest installment of Verzuz’s “R&B Nights.” According to reporting from Complex and BET, the matchup celebrated late ’90s and early 2000s R&B staples through live performances, fan voting, and surprise guest appearances from artists including 50 Cent and 702.

Catalog Power Matches Up in Los Angeles

The event followed last month’s matchup between The Game and YG, shifting the tone firmly toward classic soul and slow jams. Estelle opened the evening before the two veteran artists worked through extensive discographies. Joe established an early lead in the live fan voting, sweeping the opening four rounds with tracks such as “Don’t Wanna Be a Player” and “If I Was Your Man.”

According to Complex, Donell Jones broke through in Round 5 with “This Luv,” claiming one of his two round victories for the night. Jones secured his biggest win later in the evening when “Where I Wanna Be” outperformed Joe’s “Stutter.” Despite early technical difficulties that affected parts of his set, Jones focused the night on honoring a long-standing songwriting and performing career.

Surprise Collaborations and Behind-the-Scenes Hits

Both headliners brought out high-profile guests to punctuate their catalogs. Bossip noted that Donell Jones highlighted his extensive behind-the-scenes songwriting credits by welcoming the ’90s group 702 to the stage. Together, they performed “Get It Together,” a 1996 single that Jones wrote and produced, which marked the group’s debut on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved gold certification.

Joe answered with a series of heavy-hitting appearances. After drawing from collaborations with artists such as Big Pun, Nas, and Mariah Carey, Joe brought out 50 Cent to perform “Wanna Get to Know You.” Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda joined the rapper onstage, followed by a performance of “Big Rich Town,” the familiar theme song for the television series Power.

Scoring and the Collaborative Spirit of Verzuz

As the evening progressed, Joe’s persistent stream of recognizable records—including “I Wanna Know” and “The Love Scene”—continued to capture live viewer support. The final Complex community scorecard recorded an 18-2 victory for Joe.

Even with the lopsided voting tally, the event avoided the traditional friction associated with competitive music battles. Prior to the showcase, Jones described his philosophy for the night to reporters, stating that he viewed the engagement as a celebration rather than a feud. Both men maintained that mindset on stage, using the platform to validate decades of contributions to contemporary R&B culture.
