Jocelyn Benson Wins Michigan Governor Race in Historic Victory
Democratic nominee and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson won Michigan’s gubernatorial election early Wednesday, defeating James and securing continued Democratic control of the governor’s office. The Associated Press officially called the race at 1:45 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2026, with unofficial results showing Benson leading James 53.7% to 44.6%.
Early Morning Victory Declaration in Detroit
Benson addressed supporters in Detroit shortly after the race was called, framing the outcome as a mandate from voters across the state. This election, from the western reaches of the Upper Peninsula to downtown Detroit, voters sent a clear message: They want leaders who will fight for them, fight to lower costs, fight to grow our economy, fight the corruption that too often protects the powerful and hurts the people,
Benson told the crowd, according to Michigan Advance.
Polling leading up to election night showed Benson holding a convincing lead across most surveys. She also outraised James throughout the campaign, though her opponent received a late influx of financial support from major donors in the final days of the race.
Historic Shifts in Michigan Governance
The outcome is a first in state political history. Michigan Advance reported that this is the first time in more than 50 years that a political party has retained control of the governor’s office after an incumbent governor finished their term. The last occurrence was in 1969, when Republican William Milliken succeeded incumbent Republican Gov. George Romney.
Benson and her running mate, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids, will form the first all-female governing duo in Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer congratulated Benson on the victory.

I know that Governor-elect Benson will always put Michigan first,
Whitmer said in a statement. She will work with anyone to get things done and won’t let anyone mess with Michigan. She’s a tough, principled leader who doesn’t back down from hard fights, and Michigan is lucky to have her as our next governor.
Benson Launches Website for Incoming Administration
Following her declaration, Benson launched a transition website providing information on how members of the public can join the incoming administration. The Associated Press called the race with unofficial results showing Benson leading James 53.7% to 44.6%.
