Paris – The Louvre Museum in Paris was targeted by thieves Sunday, resulting in the theft of jewelry from Napoleon’s collection and potentially crown jewels, prompting a full closure of the museum to the public.
the brazen robbery occurred shortly after the museum opened, forcing the evacuation of all visitors. While the famed Regent diamond-over 140 carats-remained untouched, the stolen items are described as being of “inestimable value.” Two pieces of jewelry have already been recovered, reportedly dropped by the thieves during their escape. Among the recovered items is the crown of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, which sustained damage during the incident.
French Interior Minister Nunez stated that a specialized police unit is investigating the burglary.Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, who visited the Louvre following the theft, confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that no one was injured. The Louvre,the world’s most visited museum attracting approximately 25,000 daily visitors and home to masterpieces like the Mona Lisa,remains closed today due to the ongoing examination. The extent of the losses is still being determined.
