Jeonju City Launches Bid for 2029 World Badminton Championships, Eyes olympic Synergy
PARIS, FRANCE – A delegation from Jeonju City, South Korea, led by Korea Badminton Association President Kim Dong-moon and Deputy Mayor Yoon Dong-wook, has formally presented a proposal too the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to host the 2029 World Badminton Championships. The pitch, delivered during a visit to the 2025 World Badminton Championships in Paris, highlights Jeonju’s growing sports infrastructure and ambition to become a global hub for badminton.
The move signals Jeonju’s intent to leverage a new,state-of-the-art multi-purpose indoor gymnasium and its experience hosting international events to secure the prestigious tournament. City officials also emphasized the potential for synergy with future Olympic bids, positioning Jeonju as a key player in South Korea’s broader sporting ambitions. the 2029 Championships represent a significant opportunity to elevate badminton’s profile within the country and attract international tourism.
Jeonju City officials underscored the city’s existing strengths – including experience hosting international conventions, robust cultural and tourism resources, and ongoing efforts to expand the base of badminton participation – during meetings with BWF President kuning Pattama Lis Wadrarin Cool. A key component of the proposal centers on the multi-purpose indoor gymnasium currently under construction in Jangdong Complex Sports Town, near Jeonju World Cup Stadium. The facility, slated for completion in the first half of 2027, will span 23,400 square meters with a total floor area of 188,53㎡ and accommodate 5,000 spectators.It is designed to meet international game standards for badminton, basketball, volleyball, and handball.
Beyond the BWF presentation, the delegation engaged with representatives from the French Embassy, the Governor of the Republic of Korea, and the French Korean association to explore broader opportunities for sports and cultural exchange. South Korea is fielding 13 athletes at the current Paris competition, and Jeonju intends to build on this momentum through increased international engagement in readiness for both the 2029 Championships and potential future Olympic bids.
