Young Woman’s Cancer Diagnosis Follows Dismissal of Common Symptoms
AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Jenna, a 31-year-old New Zealand woman, is facing cancer treatment after initially dismissing several warning signs as everyday occurrences, just as she and her partner, Josh, were preparing to start a family. Her story serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of proactive health awareness, even in young, fit individuals.
Jenna, who lives on the Hibiscus Coast, had been experiencing symptoms she initially attributed to normal fluctuations. She brushed off persistent fatigue, attributing it to a busy lifestyle. Changes in her bowel habits were similarly dismissed, and she overlooked unexplained weight loss, believing it was simply due to increased exercise. These seemingly minor issues ultimately led to a cancer diagnosis, throwing her carefully laid plans into uncertainty.
“You walk thru life thinking you’re invincible, especially when you’re young and fit,” Jenna shared. “And if I had a hat on or a wig on, you’d have absolutely no idea what I am going through.”
She acknowledges the road ahead will be challenging. “I’ve been told that there will be ups and downs, and that it will get worse before it gets better. So I’m only at the very beginning.”
Despite the daunting diagnosis, Jenna and Josh remain hopeful. They have eight healthy embryos frozen, offering a potential path to parenthood once Jenna completes treatment.Currently, her priority is focused on healing and recovery.
Jenna has adopted a holistic approach to support her treatment, incorporating a Mediterranean diet, minimizing sugar intake, staying hydrated, and engaging in light to moderate exercise. “I’m just trying to do everything I can to have the best possible outcome,” she said. “Being so young… I’m confident that wiht food and the right treatment and the right support, I can get through this.”
While starting a family is now on hold, Jenna expressed gratitude that the diagnosis came before they began trying to conceive. “Having kids is definitely on the back burner temporarily,” she stated, adding she is “very glad” to have the frozen embryos as a “safety net.”
Surrounded by the support of friends and family in her sunny coastal home, Jenna remains steadfast. “The world keeps spinning. You’ve just got to carry on,” she said.
