Jeff Wilson endorses Nations Championship structure

November 6, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Former All Blacks star Jeff Wilson has publicly backed the new Nations Championship, stating that World Rugby has finally implemented a format that provides meaningful stakes for international Test matches. The Nations Championship, which concludes with a Finals Weekend at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, has been set up to put more on the line in the mid-year and end-of-year internationals.

Tournament design increases competitive pressure

The championship divides teams into two distinct groups, with Six Nations participants in one and The Rugby Championship nations joined by Japan and Fiji in the other. According to Wilson, this setup forces teams to prioritize more than just a match victory. Because the standings rely on points differential and bonus points, top-tier nations like South Africa and the All Blacks must now chase try-scoring bonuses to secure their path to the final.

“This is the beauty of this competition,” Wilson told Sport Nation. “All of a sudden, these Test matches have another purpose, they’re not just one-off games where you’re looking for a one-off result, it becomes part of a bigger picture.” He noted that the Springboks demonstrated this tactical shift by selecting their strongest possible side for a match against Italy to maximize their points haul.

Dave Rennie balances squad rotation with upcoming match results

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie currently faces the challenge of balancing necessary squad rotation with the requirement to secure results in the upcoming three matches.

Wilson identified specific players who may feature, including Saula Ma’u, who remains in contention following the absence of Tyrel Lomax. He also highlighted the development of hooker George Bell, noting that while Bell faces significant competition for the starting jersey, his performance for Canterbury has placed him firmly in the wider selection conversation for the upcoming Super Rugby season.

The tournament’s structure ensures that even high-performing teams like the All Blacks and the Springboks remain under pressure to maintain high standards throughout the European leg of the competition. As the teams head toward the concluding Finals Weekend at Twickenham, the emphasis on bonus-point accumulation remains the defining factor for those seeking the inaugural title.
