Brilliant Union Beats Celta Vigo to Reach 10 Points in Europa League
Union climbed to fourth place in the Europa League standings on November 5, 2026, after securing a 1-2 away victory against Celta de Vigo. Nieuwsblad reported that a double strike from Besfort Zeneli and decisive saves by goalkeeper Hervé Koffi propelled the Brussels club to 10 points out of 12 in the league phase.
The visitors fell behind early when Pablo Durán capitalized after 12 minutes, beating Koffi after Massiré Sylla was caught out of position. Celta de Vigo controlled large spells of the opening period, pinning Union back on their heels. De Standaard noted that the team harbored clear ambitions before kickoff to finish inside the top eight of the league phase to secure direct qualification for the round of 16.
Adem Zorgane shifted the momentum after returning from injury. Sporza reported that the Algerian midfielder unlocked the Celta defense in the 35th minute with a long, precise pass that found Zeneli. The Swedish midfielder took the ball out of the air and scrambled it past the defense to level the score at 1-1.
Just four minutes after the interval, Zeneli struck again. He initiated an attacking sequence that ended with a deflected shot beating the Celta goalkeeper to make it 1-2. Union nearly extended their lead further when they earned a penalty kick with fifteen minutes remaining on the clock. Zeneli stepped up to the spot but missed the conversion, keeping the Spanish side within striking distance.
The missed penalty triggered a frantic closing sequence. Koffi delivered multiple stops to protect the advantage, including a double save on Rueda and Aspas, followed by crucial saves as Celta pressed. BRUZZ noted that the result extends Union’s unbeaten run across all competitions to 13 matches, dating back to an August 11 Champions League qualifier against Bodø/Glimt.
Defensive Resilience and Squad Rotation in Vigo
Head coach personnel choices shaped the tactics on the pitch. Sylla rebounded from his early mistake to anchor the backline alongside Nikki Havenaar, while Louis Patris covered ground on the flank for the full 95 minutes.
Substitutes Kevin Rodríguez, Denzel De Roeve, and Relebohile Mofokeng appeared as Celta pressed in the dying minutes. Sykes and Ilan Hurtevent entered too late in the match to receive player ratings from Nieuwsblad analysts.
Upcoming Fixtures in the League Phase
Union sits comfortably on 10 points after four matches, positioning themselves firmly in the race for automatic progression. BRUZZ outlined the remaining fixture list for the Brussels side, which includes upcoming matches against Lech Poznan, Olympique Lyon, Beşiktaş, and Celtic.
