JB Sentral Train Suspension & Public Transport Alternatives: What You Need to Know
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will suspend train services at JB Sentral station starting June 11 to facilitate construction for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project. The temporary halt affects the Tebrau Shuttle, the primary rail connection between Johor Bahru and Singapore, as officials work to integrate the new infrastructure into the existing transit hub.
Scope of the Service Suspension

The suspension specifically targets the Tebrau Shuttle, which currently serves as the sole rail link across the Johor Strait. According to KTMB, the closure is necessary to allow for site preparation and structural works required for the RTS Link, a 4-kilometer light rail project designed to connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore.
While KTMB has confirmed the suspension date, the duration of the service disruption remains subject to the progress of construction activities. The RTS Link project, overseen by Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd, aims to alleviate the chronic congestion at the Causeway by providing an alternative transit mode capable of carrying 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
Transit Challenges and Bottleneck Concerns
The reliance on bus networks and private vehicles remains a point of contention for daily commuters. Reports from *The Straits Times* indicate that despite the high volume of cross-border traffic, public bus adoption faces hurdles, including long wait times, complex route navigation, and a lack of integrated digital payment systems across operators.
Transport analysts have raised concerns regarding the transit ecosystem surrounding JB Sentral. The transition period for the RTS Link construction is seen as a critical test for local infrastructure. According to reporting by *CNA*, the lack of clarity regarding long-term rail connectivity plans beyond the RTS Link has heightened fears of a persistent bottleneck. Critics argue that without a synchronized strategy for feeder bus services and improved pedestrian accessibility at the station, the RTS Link may struggle to reach its full capacity when it begins operations.
Current Alternatives and Infrastructure Status

Commuters currently moving between Johor Bahru and Singapore are largely dependent on cross-border bus services operated by companies such as Causeway Link and SBS Transit. However, the efficiency of these services is often dictated by traffic conditions on the Johor-Singapore Causeway.
The integration of the RTS Link is intended to replace the Tebrau Shuttle’s function, but the interim period poses challenges for those accustomed to rail travel. While the government has emphasized that the RTS Link is on schedule for completion, the immediate impact of the JB Sentral suspension forces a reliance on road-based transport during a period when the Causeway is already operating at peak volume.
As of the latest official update, KTMB has not provided a definitive date for the resumption of the shuttle service, citing the complexity of the ongoing construction requirements.
