Sentani, Papua – The Jayapura Regency Government is intensifying calls for preventative measures against HIV and AIDS, particularly urging young people and the broader community to prioritize safe relationships. The appeal comes as data reveals a significant number of cases within the region.
Acting Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Jayapura Regency,Yusuf Yambe Yabdi, emphasized the importance of health preservation for the younger generation, whom he identified as the future of regional growth. “The number of recorded HIV cases in Jayapura Regency is 3,371 cases, this is actually a loud alarm for us to be more alert and maintain our lifestyle,” Yabdi stated in sentani on tuesday.
Officials highlight the urgency of addressing the issue, noting that 740 deaths have been recorded among the 3,371 HIV cases in the Regency. this data, they say, underscores the severity of the virus despite its invisible nature.
Yabdi stressed the need for increased public awareness and responsible behavior. “It is important to disseminate case data so that we can be more self-aware, maintain good behavior, be loyal to one partner, and not have illicit relations outside of marriage,” he explained.
The government plans to expand educational outreach programs beyond World AIDS Day, scheduling regular sessions throughout the year to emphasize prevention. “Outreach is very important so that we can educate our society about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, and their impact on the future sustainability of the young generation and the development of this region,” Yabdi added.
Ultimately, officials believe prevention hinges on individual awareness, responsible decision-making in relationships, and strong support systems within families and communities.
