Japan to Subsidize Flexible Perovskite Solar Cell Projects in Southeast Asia | Nikkei Asia

Japan will begin offering subsidies to support the export of flexible perovskite solar cells, a move intended to bolster the international adoption of the emerging renewable energy technology. The initiative, announced February 18, 2026, aims to position Japan as a leader in perovskite solar cell innovation and manufacturing.

The subsidies will cover a portion of the installation costs for projects utilizing the flexible solar cells in countries including Indonesia and Thailand, according to the government. The move comes as Sekisui Chemical Co. Prepares to ramp up mass production of bendable perovskite solar cells, a development announced earlier this month. Sekisui Chemical is positioning the cells for a variety of applications, capitalizing on their lightweight and flexible nature.

Perovskite solar cells represent a potential breakthrough in solar energy, offering the promise of higher efficiency and lower production costs compared to traditional silicon-based cells. The flexibility of the cells opens up recent possibilities for integration into surfaces and structures where rigid panels are unsuitable. Sekisui Chemical’s investment in the technology signals a growing confidence in its commercial viability.

The Japanese government’s support extends beyond subsidies, with plans to facilitate technology transfer and collaboration with overseas partners. Officials have indicated a desire to establish a robust supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem for perovskite solar cells, both domestically and internationally. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote Japanese technological innovation and strengthen its position in the global renewable energy market.

Sekisui Chemical is also reportedly exploring opportunities in India, seeking to expand its compound business, particularly in the area of Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC). This expansion is separate from the perovskite solar cell initiative but demonstrates the company’s broader international growth strategy.

The details of the subsidy program, including the specific amount of financial assistance available and the eligibility criteria for projects, have not been fully disclosed. Further announcements are expected in the coming months as the program is rolled out.
