Breaking News: former FBI Director James Comey Indicted
WASHINGTON – Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on two charges, the Department of Justice announced today. The indictment marks a notable growth in ongoing scrutiny surrounding the FBI’s actions during the 2016 presidential election and the subsequent examination into potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The charges stem from allegations that Comey improperly handled classified data and made false statements. Specifically, the indictment reportedly relates to leaks of memos detailing Comey’s conversations with then-President Donald Trump.
The events leading to the indictment began in 2017 when Trump abruptly fired Comey, initially citing his handling of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, but later admitting the dismissal was due to the Russian collusion probe. This firing led to the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel, whose report documented numerous links between Trump campaign officials and Russian operatives, though it did not establish a criminal conspiracy.
Following his departure from the FBI, Comey leaked memos he had kept documenting his interactions with Trump – records that became central to questions regarding potential obstruction of justice. In 2020, Comey testified before Congress to defend the FBI’s 2016 “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation, facing accusations from Republican senators of lying about authorized leaks. Comey maintained his truthfulness under oath.
Current FBI Director Kash Patel stated on X (formerly Twitter): “For far too long, previous corrupt leadership and their enablers weaponized federal law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions and severely eroding public trust.” He added, ”Nowhere was this politicization of law enforcement more blatant than during the Russiagate Hoax, a disgraceful chapter in history we continue to investigate and expose.” Patel concluded,”Everyone, especially those in positions of power, will be held to account – no matter their perch.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi also commented, stating on X, “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”
Comey is expected to appear in federal court in Virginia in the coming days for arraignment.
This is a developing story.
