Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted on False Statement and Obstruction Charges
(NewsNation) – Former FBI Director James Comey faces federal charges of making a false statement and obstruction of justice, following an indictment returned by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on Thursday. The news comes as U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on social media, stating, “No one is above the law.”
U.S.Attorney Lindsey Halligan announced the indictment, explaining the charges stem from Comey’s September 30, 2020, testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding potential collusion between Russia and the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump.
“The charges as alleged in this case represent a breach of the public trust at an remarkable level,” Halligan stated. “The balance of power is a bedrock principle of our democracy, and it relies upon accountability and a forthright presentation of facts from executive leadership to congressional oversight. Any intent to avoid, evade, prevent, or obstruct compliance is a violation of professional duty and, most importantly, the law.”
The indictment follows recent calls from former President Trump for the Justice Department to prosecute Comey, along with others he believes have acted against him. Trump fired Comey early in his first term as president.
Bondi echoed the sentiment of accountability in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.” (https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1971345371583611099)
