Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted on False ‍Statement and Obstruction Charges

(NewsNation) – Former FBI Director James Comey faces federal charges of making a false statement and obstruction⁢ of justice, following⁣ an indictment ‌returned by ‌a‍ grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on Thursday. The news comes as ⁤U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on social media, stating, “No one is⁤ above the law.”

U.S.Attorney Lindsey ⁤Halligan announced‌ the indictment, explaining the charges stem from Comey’s September 30, 2020, ‌testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding⁣ potential collusion between Russia and the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump.

“The charges as alleged ⁤in this⁣ case represent a breach of the public trust ⁢at an remarkable level,” Halligan stated. “The balance‍ of power is ‍a bedrock principle of our democracy, and it relies upon accountability and a ⁣forthright presentation ⁤of facts from executive leadership ⁤to congressional oversight. Any intent to ‍avoid, evade, prevent, or ‌obstruct compliance is ‍a violation of professional⁣ duty and, most importantly, the law.”

The‌ indictment follows recent calls from⁢ former President‌ Trump for the Justice Department⁣ to prosecute Comey, along with others‌ he believes have acted against him. Trump ⁣fired Comey early in his⁣ first term as president.

Bondi echoed the sentiment of accountability in ‍a post on X (formerly‌ Twitter), stating, “Today’s indictment reflects this Department⁣ of Justice’s commitment to holding ⁣those who abuse positions of power⁤ accountable for misleading⁣ the American ⁣people. We will follow the facts in this case.” (https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1971345371583611099)
