Ja’Marr Chase‘s appeal of his unprecedented one-game suspension stemming from an on-field incident with Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey will be heard by former Packers receiver Jordy Nelson, the NFL announced. Nelson, serving as a jointly appointed appeals officer alongside Derrick Brooks and Ramon Foster, will review the Bengals wide receiver’s case.
The appeal centers around video evidence surfacing after the game showing Chase appearing to spit toward Ramsey during a heated exchange. If the suspension is upheld, Chase will miss Sunday’s game against the Patriots and forfeit $448,333 in weekly pay, and also $58,823 in per-game active bonus money. Chase would be the first NFL player ever suspended solely for spitting.
The incident occurred during the Bengals-Steelers game, where Ramsey was ejected for throwing a punch at Chase.Initially, officials did not observe the alleged spitting, but footage from WXIX-TV in Cincinnati later revealed the action. chase previously denied spitting during postgame interviews.
This case arrives on the heels of a similar incident involving Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who was ejected and fined a game check for spitting on cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott earlier this season, but did not appeal the NFL’s decision. The outcome of Chase’s appeal will likely set a precedent for future on-field conduct and disciplinary action. Chase declined to comment on the matter when approached by reporters Monday.
