Jakarta Gasoline Shortage: Shell Predicts Fuel Depletion

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Jakarta – Shell Indonesia is facing a critical fuel shortage, with only five of its 200 gas stations currently selling gasoline, and those remaining stations are projected‌ to be depleted by Thursday night, October 2, 2025. The company has experienced stock outs as August 2025, according to President Director & Managing Director ⁣of‍ Mobility Shell ⁣Indonesia, Ingrid Siburian.

“At the moment‌ there may not be up to 10…⁢ only about 5 gas⁣ stations ‍that if we see ⁢tomorrow⁣ night may also be used up.So indeed we realy experience stock out, scarcity for gasoline type fuel,” Siburian stated⁢ during a ⁤hearing with the House of⁢ Representatives Commission XII on Wednesday, October ‌1, ⁢2025.

Shell had requested an additional import quota ⁤in ⁤June 2025 to meet rising consumer demand. However, import restrictions imposed by the government are hindering their ability⁣ to ⁢replenish supplies. ⁣

According ‌to an official letter from the Deputy Minister of energy and Mineral Resources dated ⁣July 17, 2025,⁣ imports are currently limited to only 10% above sales from 2024.

Following coordination⁣ meetings‍ with the Ministry of ‌Energy and ‌Mineral Resources, a‌ decision was reached for Pertamina Patra Niaga to⁣ provide Shell with base fuel. Siburian expressed appreciation ‍for this ⁤arrangement, ‍stating, “And of course‍ this decision is‌ appreciated, because this is‍ indeed one of ⁣our concerns.”
