Palma de Mallorca – Jaime Anglada, a celebrated Mallorcan singer and close friend of King Felipe VI, received the Gold Medal of the Balearic Islands on Saturday, marking a poignant return to public life following a near-fatal accident last summer. The ceremony, held as other regional awards were being presented in Andalusia, was described as more personal than institutional, reflecting the emotional weight of Anglada’s recovery.
Accepting the award, the highest distinction granted by the Balearic government, Anglada publicly acknowledged the healthcare professionals who saved his life. “If this heart beats, We see thanks to the healthcare personnel,” he stated, specifically mentioning Son Espases hospital and the emergency services. He also expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery, promising to carry his loved ones “in the little heart” and vowing to “always shout your names.”
The recognition comes seven months after Anglada was critically injured when his motorcycle was struck by a car that fled the scene on August 8, 2025. Police were able to locate the driver, who was found to be driving with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. The collision necessitated multiple surgeries, including procedures on his jaw, wrist, and hip, as well as two operations to address head injuries.
Anglada spent over ten days in intensive care at Son Espases hospital, and his condition prompted widespread concern across the islands and throughout Spain. He subsequently underwent a period of rehabilitation before returning to public appearances. The singer’s recovery was described as “very favorable” by hospital officials when he was discharged on September 11, 2025.
During Saturday’s ceremony, presided over by Balearic Islands President Marga Prohens, Anglada reportedly projected an image of strength and tranquility, taking time to pose for photographs and acknowledge the applause of the audience. The Gold Medal is awarded to individuals and institutions recognized for their contributions to Balearic society.
