J. Cole on Drake & Kendrick Lamar Beef: Apology & Regret Explained

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Rapper J. Cole publicly addressed his involvement in the recent feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, revealing a last-minute crisis of conscience that led to his apology to Lamar during his 2024 Dreamville Festival set. The North Carolina artist, speaking with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis, described feeling “miserable” and “misrepresented” by his contribution to the conflict, specifically his diss track “7 Minute Drill.”

Cole’s intervention came after Lamar released a scathing verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s track “Like That” in April 2024, directly challenging both Drake and Cole. Responding with “7 Minute Drill,” Cole quickly found himself entangled in a public dispute that escalated rapidly. However, the artist stated that just hours before taking the stage at Dreamville, he experienced a profound shift in perspective. “It hit me an hour before [hitting the stage],” Cole recounted. “Before that, I was stressing the f*** out. Then the moment for the idea came to me like a guide, and I lifted, and I got light, and I got excited.”

The decision to apologize, Cole explained, stemmed from a realization that he was inadvertently fueling division and contradicting his own values. “I felt like I misrepresented myself,” he said. “I’m giving life to division and to negative storylines and negative perceptions on somebody that I f*** with and got love for.” He removed “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services shortly after the festival appearance, a move signaling his desire to disengage from the escalating conflict.

Despite the public nature of the feud, and his own participation, Cole emphasized his continued respect and affection for both artists. “I got genuine love for these dudes,” he told Alexis, adding, “I hate to see the world sh*t on either one of them in defense of the other…even saying it out loud is a little silly.” This sentiment reflects a long-standing dynamic between the three artists, who, despite competing for chart positions in the 2010s, maintained a level of professional camaraderie, according to Cole.

Cole’s comments come nearly two years after the initial spark of the feud, which ultimately led to a lawsuit filed by Drake against Lamar. The legal action, details of which remain largely undisclosed, further complicated the already fraught relationship between the artists. XXL Magazine reported on the interview, highlighting Cole’s desire to avoid taking sides in a conflict he felt was detrimental to all involved.

The artist’s wife, Cole noted, played a role in his realization, observing his distress and prompting deeper reflection. “I felt miserable about it…So I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I gotta go on this stage and come out here and pretend almost,’” he said. “Like, people think that I’m representing that.” The timing of his apology, coinciding with the release of his album Might Delete Later, added to the pressure, as Cole felt compelled to publicly align his actions with his true beliefs. AllHipHop detailed this internal struggle, emphasizing the weight of the situation on Cole.

As of now, neither Drake nor Lamar have publicly responded to Cole’s recent comments. The status of the lawsuit remains unclear, and the future of their professional relationship remains uncertain.
