J-20 Stealth Fighter Likely to Gain Supercruise via WS-15 Engine

June 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has reportedly advanced the integration of the WS-15 engine into the J-20 stealth fighter, a development that could grant the aircraft supercruise capabilities, according to a 2023 analysis by Aviation Week. The WS-15, a high-thrust turbofan engine, is part of China’s efforts to reduce reliance on Russian and Soviet-era propulsion systems, with multiple sources confirming its late-stage development. A 2022 report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission noted that the engine’s progress aligns with China’s broader goals to modernize its air superiority platforms.

The WS-15’s potential to enable supercruise—sustained supersonic flight without afterburners—would mark a significant enhancement for the J-20, which currently relies on the less powerful WS-10 engine. A 2021 technical paper published in the Chinese Journal of Aeronautics described the WS-15 as capable of producing 18,000 kilograms of thrust, a figure that exceeds the thrust-to-weight ratio required for supercruise. However, no official PLAAF statement has confirmed the engine’s deployment on the J-20, and independent verification of its performance remains limited.

Defense analysts have highlighted the strategic implications of the WS-15’s development. “The engine represents a critical step toward China’s goal of fielding a fourth-generation+ air superiority platform,” said Dr. James Holmes, a military analyst at the U.S. Naval War College. “Supercruise would allow the J-20 to engage targets at longer ranges while conserving fuel, a capability that could shift regional air combat dynamics.” This assessment is supported by a 2023 report from the RAND Corporation, which noted that China’s focus on engine innovation reflects its broader investment in aerospace technology.

China’s aviation industry has faced challenges in engine development, with the WS-15’s timeline delayed by technical hurdles. A 2022 statement from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) indicated that the engine was undergoing “final testing phases,” though no specific deployment date was provided. Meanwhile, the PLAAF has continued to operate the J-20 with its existing engines, with public footage showing the aircraft in training exercises over the South China Sea. The extent to which the WS-15 will be retrofitted remains unclear, as no official procurement orders have been disclosed.

The integration of the WS-15 into the J-20 aligns with China’s push to develop indigenous military technology, a priority outlined in the 2021 Defense White Paper. The document emphasized reducing dependence on foreign suppliers, a goal that has driven investments in engine production. However, experts caution that supercruise capabilities require more than just engine upgrades. “The J-20’s aerodynamics and avionics must also be optimized for sustained supersonic flight,” said Dr. Andrew Scobell, a senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore. “China has made progress, but the full realization of this capability is still years away.”

Regional observers have closely monitored the J-20’s evolution, with Japan and Taiwan expressing concerns over its potential impact on air power balance. A 2023 report by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that China’s advancements in stealth and propulsion technologies “pose a growing challenge to regional stability.” The report also highlighted the need for continued U.S. military support to Pacific allies, including the deployment of advanced fighter squadrons and surveillance systems. No official response from China’s defense ministry has been released regarding the WS-15’s role in the J-20 program.
