Dominican Republic Could Host Regional Table Tennis training Hub with ITTF Support
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – The Dominican Republic is a step closer to becoming a leading center for table tennis development in the Americas, following a productive visit from International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Petra Sorling. Sorling expressed the ITTF’s willingness to support the establishment of a high-performance training center within the country during a meeting with Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) President Garibaldy Bautista.
Sorling, during her visit to COD headquarters, highlighted the Dominican Republic’s “tradition” in the sport and emphasized the potential for growth.She indicated that investment in infrastructure is key to unlocking the nation’s potential and fostering the development of young talent, bringing it in line with successful programs across the continent.
“Coming to the Dominican Republic is to see how we can contribute to the development of table tennis, for being a country of tradition,” Sorling stated, according to a press release.
The ITTF delegation included Raúl calin, ITTF General Secretary; Juan Vila Reinoso, President of ITTF Américas; and Gary Hernández, President of the Dominican Table Tennis Federation. María Piña, a celebrated figure in Dominican sports, also attended the meeting representing the COD.
Bautista welcomed Sorling’s commitment, underscoring the potential for a regional training center to elevate table tennis throughout the Americas.
The development comes as the Dominican republic continues to strengthen its position as a sporting hub in the Caribbean. Further details regarding the proposed training center, including potential location and funding, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
