Serbia Manager Veljko Paunovic Vows resilience Ahead of England Euro 2024 Clash

LONDON -⁤ Newly appointed Serbia manager‌ Veljko Paunovic has declared a refusal to yield to pessimism as he‍ prepares his team for a challenging Euro 2024 campaign opener against England at ‌Wembley Stadium. Paunovic, ⁣returning to international management with Serbia, emphasized a core belief in fighting spirit and seizing opportunities, framing the ⁤match as a defining moment⁢ for the‍ current generation of players.

The appointment marks a ‍return for Paunovic, who previously enjoyed a accomplished spell with Serbian SuperLiga side FK Vojvodina and led Oviedo to promotion in 2015, a victory he described as “even greater than‍ you can imagine.” He recounted ⁣the deep connection forged with that Oviedo team, stating, “There’s something‌ that will unite‌ us for ever,” and expressed a similar ambition to build a lasting bond⁤ with⁤ his current squad. He acknowledged the urgency of the task, noting this represents a “last call, the last‍ possibility” for many of his players to compete at the highest level.

Paunovic revealed a ‌direct conversation with Serbian federation directors where he prioritized immediate impact‍ over a long-term project. “Thay talked about a four-year project. And I saeid: ‘But what about⁤ now?’ ‍They said: ‘It’s ‌tough.’ I said: ‘Let’s do it the other way round, let’s focus on this.'” He believes in unlocking the potential within the team, focusing on rebuilding “self-esteem” and fostering “concentration, organisation, commitment.”‌

His coaching journey includes a stint with Reading ⁤in 2022, and a formative experience playing for Real Mallorca in 1999 alongside players like Chelsea’s⁤ current manager. ‍Paunovic reflected ⁣on his broader philosophy, stating, “It’s not in our genes to give up.” He intends to instill this mindset in his players, reminding them of the rarity of playing at Wembley: “Few even get the chance ‌in life to see a game at Wembley; others⁢ get the chance to play one.” He hopes his ⁢team can “echo, leave a legacy” despite the formidable challenge ahead.
