In a first for Italy, a 10-year-old pediatric patient with type 1 diabetes has received a groundbreaking treatment designed to slow the disease’s progression.The infusion of teplizumab, administered at the Borgo Trento Hospital’s Pediatrics Department in Verona, aims to delay the onset of full-blown type 1 diabetes and reduce the need for insulin injections.
Teplizumab Offers Hope for delaying Type 1 Diabetes
The young patient, already producing insulin, was identified through a screening program that has been monitoring at-risk individuals for over 30 years. This early detection allowed doctors to administer teplizumab in stage 2 of the disease, before the onset of noticeable symptoms.
