Gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli Hospitalized in Germany Following Serious Injury; Transfer to Italian Rehabilitation Center Planned
Essen, Germany – Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli, 23, remains hospitalized in Essen, Germany, following a severe injury sustained during the team competition at the 32nd Summer Universiade. Bonicelli suffered a cervical distortion trauma with a subluxation of the fifth vertebra while competing on the rings. the injury was surgically addressed with prompt and effective intervention.
Professor Andrea Ferretti, president of the new FGI medical commission and director of the Coni Sports Medicine Institute, met with bonicelli and his neurosurgery colleagues at the University Polyclinic in Essen. Following an in-depth assessment of Bonicelli’s current clinical condition, it was confirmed that while the surgical repair was successful, the extent of neurological damage is yet to be fully determined.
The young athlete, who hails from Lecco, is reported to be in good general condition. A tracheotomy has been performed to assist with his breathing. Doctors anticipate at least another week of hospitalization before his discharge can be considered.Professor Ferretti has been in constant dialog with the federal president, Andrea Facci, and has initiated the necesary arrangements for Bonicelli’s secure transfer to a rehabilitation center in Italy.
