‘It: Welcome to Derry‘ Reveals Entity’s Formless Nature, Heightens stakes in Prequel Series
The HBO prequel series It: Welcome to Derry is delving deeper into the terrifying nature of the entity known as “It,” revealing its ability to shapeshift and exploit fear as a primary attack method. Recent episodes depict the entity as a being that shouldn’t be perceived, with mental contact proving nearly fatal for one character.
The series follows the early days of the evil that plagues Derry, Maine, decades before the events of Stephen King’s It and It: Chapter Two. In episode four, characters Hallorann and Hanlon, along with Pauly, conduct aerial surveillance, searching for “It vibrations” while Hallorann-described as a “human compass”-clutches Shaw‘s slingshot. Hallorann’s subsequent mental contact with the entity is so traumatic he warns General Shaw, stating, “It wasn’t supposed to see us. It wasn’t supposed to know. I got a feeling if we keep doing what we’re doing, something bad’s coming. Maybe we ought to just let this thing be?”
General Shaw’s controversial plan to capture and weaponize “It” against the Soviet Union is met with growing concern, especially from Major Hanlon, who questions, “what the hell do you have us chasing?” The series foreshadows the tragic fate of Derry as depicted in King’s novels, making Shaw’s plan all the more reckless.
Upcoming episodes promise a return to the infamous location of “29 Neibolt Street” and further exploration of the ”beacons” connected to the entity, with Hallorann shown attempting to extract information from unwilling minds. New episodes of It: Welcome to Derry are released Sundays on HBO.
