Conflict Escalation: Israel’s Actions Raise Global Concerns
Indonesia’s foreign minister warns of potential global repercussions stemming from Israel’s actions in the Middle East. These actions, including strikes on Iran, could embolden other nations to disregard international laws. The situation risks destabilizing the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Fears of International Law Violations
At a hearing, Sugiono, the Foreign Minister, informed the House of Representatives’ Commission I about his worries. He believes Israel’s activities in Gaza and its attack on Iran might prompt other countries to violate international laws. Sugiono explained that countries might use national interests as justification for breaking international norms.
“Maybe other countries in the world will now have the courage to break international law under the guise of protecting their national interests,”
—Sugiono, Foreign Minister
Sugiono also expressed concern that Israel’s conduct could trigger a crisis in the Middle East. The war could spill over into the Indo-Pacific region. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the international community is already grappling with over 20 active armed conflicts globally, including several with international implications (CFR Tracker).
The Ongoing Conflict
The war in Gaza started due to Hamas’s assault on Israel in October 2023. This attack resulted in 1,219 fatalities, mainly civilians. Israel’s retaliatory actions have led to at least 56,531 deaths in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry.
Furthermore, Israel launched a major bombing campaign against Iran on June 13, which killed top military figures and scientists. The Israeli attacks targeted military bases, nuclear sites, and residential areas throughout Iran.
The escalating tensions in the Middle East present a complex challenge for global stability. The potential for broader conflict and violations of international law necessitates careful diplomatic efforts and de-escalation strategies.
