Israel Voices Opposition to Potential F-35 Sale to Turkey
JERUSALEM – Israel has formally expressed concerns to the United States regarding a potential sale of advanced weaponry, specifically F-35 fighter jets, to Turkey, citing Ankara’s increasingly “bellicose” foreign policy. The objection underscores ongoing tensions between the two nations despite turkey’s vital role within the NATO alliance.
The Israeli government, while acknowledging Turkey’s strategic importance and military strength, fears that supplying advanced arms could embolden actions detrimental to regional stability.this stance reflects a broader concern over Turkish military interventions and support for groups perceived as antagonistic to Israeli interests in areas like Syria and, particularly, the Gaza Strip. The United States is currently considering a potential sale of F-35s to Saudi Arabia as well, but Israeli officials have indicated this does not currently pose a threat to their military advantage.
According to a statement released by a senior Israeli official, the country understands the U.S. desire to maintain a strong relationship with Turkey and seeks a collaborative approach that balances both nations’ security needs. Though, Israel remains firmly opposed to any Turkish military involvement in Gaza or Syria – a position the U.S. reportedly respects.
The objection comes as the Biden management weighs options to strengthen ties with Turkey, a key NATO member, while navigating complex regional dynamics and security concerns. The potential F-35 sale is seen as a key component of any broader rapprochement, but Israel’s opposition presents a meaningful hurdle.
