Israel May Request Semi-Final Shift for Eurovision 2027 Due to Memorial Day Clash

August 14, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Burgas and Sofia Vie for 2027 Eurovision Host Rights

The European Broadcasting Union and Bulgarian broadcaster BNT announced that Burgas and Sofia remain in the running to host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest in May 2027. The schedule creates an overlap with Israel’s Memorial Day.

Plovdiv and Varna Dropped From Contention

The selection process for the 2027 competition narrowed significantly when BNT eliminated initial bids from Plovdiv and Varna. Municipalities in both Burgas and Sofia passed the technical specification assessments and European Broadcasting Union production standards. Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, thanked Plovdiv and Varna for their participation while highlighting the economic advantages of hosting the cultural event.

Technical Criteria Shape the Final Cut

BNT Director General Milena Milotinova noted that the elimination of Plovdiv and Varna relied strictly on pre-established technical and infrastructure criteria. Varna notably serves as the birthplace of reigning Eurovision champion DARA, whose victory with the song Bangaranga brought the contest to Bulgaria for the first time. An international evaluation working group is currently reviewing the remaining bids from Burgas and Sofia, with a final host city decision expected in the coming weeks.

Logistical Hurdles and Memorial Day Overlap

The prospective dates for the 2027 contest present a logistical challenge for Israeli delegations observing Memorial Day.

Final Preparations and Upcoming Broadcaster Decisions

As the European Broadcasting Union evaluates the final technical proposals from Burgas and Sofia, international delegations must prepare for adjustments to the upcoming contest calendar. Broadcasters and participating nations balancing cultural observances with live television timelines will finalize their scheduling requests ahead of the official host city announcement. Stakeholders requiring expert regulatory guidance or project management support often engage Broadcast Consulting and Compliance Firms to navigate complex multi-jurisdictional frameworks. The final decision by BNT and the European Broadcasting Union will set the operational timeline for the 71st contest as preparations in Bulgaria accelerate.
