Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Strained as Death Toll Rises Amid Renewed Strikes
The cumulative death toll from the Israeli military campaign in Lebanon has reached 16,545, including 4,324 fatalities and 12,221 wounded, according to a statistical report published by the Lebanese Ministry of Health via the National News Agency. The figures encompass casualties recorded since the escalation began on March 2, as renewed fighting in southern Lebanon strains a U.S.-backed ceasefire.
Casualties Among Healthcare Workers and Civil Infrastructure
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the ongoing military campaign has heavily impacted medical personnel and emergency responders. The number of casualties among healthcare workers reached 135 martyrs and 406 wounded. These losses stem from 176 separate attacks targeting ambulance teams and medical personnel across Lebanese towns, villages, and cities.
The escalation has also driven widespread displacement, forcing approximately 1.5 million Lebanese from their homes. The majority of displaced residents remain unregistered in formal shelters, compounding the humanitarian strain across the region.
Recent strikes have continued to produce civilian casualties. According to Politico, Israeli airstrikes on a village in southern Lebanon killed 12 people, including two children. In a separate incident reported by The Times of Israel, a drone strike targeting a motorcycle in southern Lebanon left one person dead.
Diplomatic and Military Context
The intensification of military operations coincides with fragile diplomatic efforts.
Diplomatic channels have not yet yielded a stable cessation of hostilities. U.S. and regional mediators continue to assess the durability of the truce as military actions persist on the ground.
