Israel Arrests Suspects After West Bank Attacks on Journalist and Diplomats
Veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was seriously injured in the occupied West Bank after being attacked by a crowd of masked Israeli settlers. She described how she was saved with the help of local Palestinians during the incident, which occurred on Friday, while she was covering the olive harvest in the village of Abu Falah, north of Ramallah.
Levine sustained four fractured vertebrae, two broken ribs, and four puncture wounds when knocked to the ground and beaten repeatedly. She stated that she likely would have been killed had she not been wearing protective body armor and a helmet.
The Olive Harvest Incident and Diplomatic Convoy Attacks
The assault in Abu Falah unfolded as villagers, journalists, and human rights activists accompanied farmers for the seasonal olive harvest. A group of young masked settlers gathered on a nearby hilltop before the Israeli military arrived.

The incident formed part of a weekend wave of violence across the West Bank. One day after the Abu Falah attack, masked settlers targeted a convoy of European diplomats visiting the Palestinian Christian town of Taybeh. The attackers smashed a window of a Belgian consulate car and beat 78-year-old Bernard Baudoux, mayor of the French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries. Church leaders in Jerusalem subsequently issued a statement condemning the heinous attack on Taybeh, noting that West Bank villages have faced a wide-scale terror by settlers during the olive harvest.
Arrests and Official Reactions to West Bank Violence
Israeli police detained 10 suspects following coordinated operations regarding the weekend attacks on the journalist and the European diplomats. Security forces named the operation “Olive Leaf” in reference to the harvest season. Radosław Sikorski spoke with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar on Tuesday, demanding that Israel fulfill its obligations as an occupying power under international law to protect civilians. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington urged Israel to respond firmly to the surge in settler violence.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office questioned reports of the assault. Netanyahu has tried to cast doubt on the violence, saying afterwards that “serious questions remain.” Meanwhile, an Israeli court released four suspects in the attack on Levine and placed them under house arrest on Wednesday, citing insufficient evidence to keep them in custody.
Unresolved Questions Surrounding Accountability
Questions remain regarding whether the legal system will hold the perpetrators fully accountable. Levine expressed low confidence in seeing her attackers brought to justice, noting that authorities must go after their leaders, the rabbis, and how they’re organised, rather than just arresting teenage thugs. Human rights group Yesh Din documented more than 530 incidents of settler violence since the start of the olive harvest in late September, averaging 27 violent incidents each day. With U.N. data showing more than 1,600 settler attacks on Palestinians and their property in 2026 alone, diplomats and community leaders continue to debate whether regional authorities will implement effective security measures to protect civilians and visiting delegations in the occupied territories.
