Israel Airport Drone Attack: Yemen, Iran, and Rising Tensions

A drone launched from Yemen struck Ramon Airport in Israel on Sunday, resulting in minor injuries to a 63-year-old man. According to a medical service report, the man was fully conscious and sustained limb injuries from fragments. airport operations were temporarily halted following the incident, with the drone impacting the arrival hall, according to an Israeli Airport Management spokesperson.

This attack marks the first direct hit by the Houthi rebels on an Israeli strategic target since a Yemeni ballistic missile struck Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport in May 2023. Israeli military officials reported intercepting four drones launched from Yemen on Sunday, successfully intercepting three before they entered Israeli airspace. The fate of the third intercepted drone was not immediately disclosed, before confirming a fourth drone “fell” at Ramon Airport. No sirens were activated during this second incident, which is currently under investigation.

The Houthi attack is believed to be in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike conducted two weeks prior that killed a senior Houthi government official and 11 other high-ranking members. This official was reportedly involved in coordinating Iranian-backed attacks.As the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, the Houthis have publicly expressed solidarity with Palestinians and have repeatedly launched drones and rockets towards Israel. israel has responded with retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting ports, power infrastructure, and the international airport in Sanaa, the rebel-held capital.

Hizam al-Asad, a member of the Houthi Political Bureau, posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The real revenge has not even begun… what is waiting for you will be much worse.”
