Israel Confirms Strikes on Hezbollah Targets in Southern Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions

Geneva, ⁤November 26, 2024 – Israel has confirmed carrying out attacks on ⁣infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, as reported during a session ⁢at the United Nations in Geneva. The confirmation ‍comes amidst ‍escalating concerns over the ‍treatment of Palestinians and Israelis during the ongoing conflict.

During the session, Daniel Meron, a head of the Israeli delegation and ambassador to the UN, rejected accusations of mistreatment leveled against Israel, dismissing them as “disinformation,” specifically targeting assertions made by UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese and a UN-mandated international⁣ commission of inquiry. That⁢ commission⁢ previously accused Israel⁢ of committing “genocide” in September.

Meron⁤ asserted that‍ Israel ‍is “committed to its obligations under international law,” even while facing “challenges posed by a‍ terrorist organization that‍ does not hesitate to openly declare ⁣its desire to ‍inflict maximum suffering on civilians in Gaza.”

meanwhile, a report from the Office of the united Nations High‌ Commissioner for Human Rights detailed that many⁣ Palestinians have been⁢ held‍ incommunicado since October 7, 2023, with some ‌experiencing treatment potentially ‌amounting to torture. Similar accusations have been ‍made against Hamas regarding its treatment of hostages in Gaza.

François Kessing, speaking ‍at the session, emphasized that violations of international law by one party to a conflict do not excuse violations by the other. He stated the committee‍ is “aware” of details regarding “acts of torture committed by Hamas against ⁢Israeli soldiers and civilians” and will consider‍ this information during a subsequent⁣ session regarding the State of Palestine.

Kessing also noted reports from various ⁣UN bodies, Israeli,⁣ Palestinian, and⁤ international NGOs, indicating a “strong escalation” in the mistreatment ⁣of ‍Palestinians since October 7, 2023, reaching “unprecedented levels” and occurring “in all impunity.”
