Japanese Prime Minister Shighgero Ishiba announced his resignation on Sunday, less than a year into his term, following his party’s loss of majority control in Parliament. Ishiba stated he would step down as president of the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The move comes after the Japanese Radio and Television Corporation reported Ishiba’s decision to resign, anticipating the party’s expected call for early leadership elections. According to reports, Ishiba is resigning to prevent further fracturing within the liberal Democratic Party.

the resignation follows a meaningful defeat in recent Senate elections, where the Liberal democratic Party and the komito party lost their majority. Despite expressing a desire to remain in office and address economic challenges as recently as last week – and pledging an economic stimulus package on Friday – pressure mounted within the party for Ishiba to step aside before a formal vote.

The ruling coalition’s failure to secure a majority in the 248-seat Senate last July initially destabilized Ishiba’s government, ultimately leading to his resignation. The party is expected to officially announce plans for early presidential elections soon.
