Isha Ambani Piramal Opens Up About IVF Journey, Advocates for Normalizing ART
Isha Ambani Piramal, daughter of Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, has publicly discussed her use of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to conceive her twins, Krishna and Adiyashakti, born in November 2022. She expressed a desire to destigmatize the assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure, noting its increasing prevalence globally.
In a recent interview wiht Vogue India, Ambani stated, “I’m very quick to say that my twins were conceived through IVF because that’s how we’ll normalise it, right?” She emphasized the importance of open conversation, adding, “No one should feel isolated or embarrassed. It’s a difficult process. When you go through it, you get physically exhausted.”
Ambani, 32, highlighted the benefits of ART for women facing fertility challenges. Approximately 250,000-300,000 IVF treatments are performed annually in India alone. She questioned why modern technology assisting in conception should be hidden, stating, “If modern technology exists in the world today, why not use it to have children? It should be something you’re excited about, not something you have to hide.” She also suggested the value of support groups and connecting with other women undergoing similar experiences.
Isha’s own experience mirrors that of her mother,Nita Ambani, who also conceived twins – Isha and Akash – through IVF. nita Ambani previously shared that she was initially told she would be unable to have children, but successfully conceived with the help of Dr. Firuza Parikh.
IVF involves removing eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory, then transferring the resulting embryos to the uterus. It’s increasingly utilized by couples experiencing infertility due to issues like blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, or male infertility. It’s also used by those at risk of genetic disorders and by lesbian couples and single parents utilizing donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy.
While a valuable option, IVF is not guaranteed to result in pregnancy. Success rates depend on factors like age, underlying fertility issues, and the specific techniques employed. The procedure also carries potential risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and complications from egg retrieval. Furthermore, the cost of IVF can be substantial, and failed attempts can lead to both physical and emotional distress.
