Irish Wholesale Electricity Prices Jump 56% in Year to July Amid Surging Gas Costs

August 21, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Wholesale electricity prices jumped 14.8% in July, pushing the 12-month surge to 56.2%, according to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Geopolitical Shocks and the European Gas Benchmark

The July price acceleration stems directly from resurgent energy costs. Reporting from the Irish Examiner highlights that the resumption of hostilities between the US and Iran in early July triggered a sharp reversal in declining commodity trends. During a temporary ceasefire that held until July 8, the Dutch TFF natural gas benchmark had retreated to approximately €45 per megawatt-hour. However, market anxiety pushed spot prices to a peak of €63.65 per megawatt-hour over the course of the month.

Crude oil followed a similar trajectory.

Sector-Wide Producer Price Pressures

The energy shock is not confined to the power grid. Manufacturing and processing sectors absorbed steep input price increases through July 2026. Domestic producer prices for manufactured goods rose 4.5% year-on-year, while export-oriented manufacturing saw an even steeper 7.6% jump, bringing the overall manufacturing producer price index up 7.3%.

Chemical products registered the most aggressive increase among sub-indices, surging 16.5% over the 12-month period. Food production costs also climbed 2.7%, led by a 9% spike in fish and fish products and a 6.7% increase across other processed food categories. Construction materials did not escape the inflationary wave. Wholesale prices for building products rose 3.3%, and the broader building and construction index—incorporating both material inputs and labor wages—grew 3.4% compared to July 2025.

Contextualizing the Surge Against Historical Peaks

Despite the severe one-year percentage increase, current market valuations sit well below the extreme crisis levels of 2022. Data cited by BizBrief indicates that wholesale electricity prices remain roughly 59.9% lower than the historic peaks recorded in August 2022. Energy fuels overall registered a modest 0.6% monthly increase in July, translating to a 19.1% year-on-year rise.
