Iowa Medical Society Launches Iowa White Coat Network for Physician Mentoring

August 21, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The Iowa Medical Society launched the Iowa White Coat Network on August 19, 2026, establishing a statewide mentoring program to connect medical students, residents, practicing physicians, and retired physicians across Iowa. Designed to tackle ongoing physician workforce shortages, the initiative matches participants virtually or in person based on career stage, specialty, geography, and professional goals.

Structuring the Statewide Mentoring Framework

Operation I.O.W.A. (Innovative Opportunities for Workforce Action) served as the foundational catalyst for the network. IMS President Lillian Erdahl, MD, emphasized that strengthening the state’s workforce requires more than aggressive recruitment tactics. Participants commit roughly 15 to 30 minutes per week to mentorship activities, maintaining high flexibility to accommodate demanding clinical schedules.

Iowa needs more physicians, but strengthening our workforce is about more than recruitment. Beyond recruitment, it is essential that we assist medical trainees, resident doctors, and established physicians in forming valuable relationships while envisioning a long-term professional path in the state. The Iowa White Coat Network gives physicians an opportunity to support one another and, ultimately, strengthen care for patients in Iowa. — Dr. Lillian Erdahl, IMS President

Historical Context and Membership Scope

Established in 1850, the Iowa Medical Society operates as the largest and oldest statewide professional association for physicians in the state. Representing more than 6,000 members, the organization focuses advocacy, education, and member engagement efforts on maintaining patient care quality. The Iowa White Coat Network functions as a core component of broader strategic initiatives aimed at expanding training opportunities and fortifying the state medical pipeline.

Connecting retired physicians with early-career practitioners preserves institutional knowledge within local markets.
