Apple Reportedly Increasing RAM in Base iPhone 18 to 12GB
Cupertino, CA – October 25, 2025 – Apple is preparing to increase the RAM in its base iPhone 18 model to 12GB, mirroring the memory configuration currently found in the iPhone 17 Pro, according to a new report. This upgrade woudl double the 8GB of unified memory offered in the standard iPhone 17 with the A19 chip.
The move comes as Apple reportedly requests increased production of LPDDR5X DRAM chips from suppliers like Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix. These chips are currently only available in 12GB and 16GB variants. While the iPhone 17 Pro introduced 12GB of unified memory – a 50% increase over previous generations – the base iPhone 17 remained at 8GB. apple has historically debuted upgrades on its higher-end models before a subsequent rollout to other devices.
The iPhone 18 lineup is also expected to launch under a new staggered release schedule. The iPhone Air 2,iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max,and iPhone Fold are slated for a fall 2026 release, with the base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e following in spring 2027.
Increased memory could benefit future Apple Intelligence features, enabling the device to handle larger, more complex local AI models. Currently, the benefits of 12GB of RAM on an iPhone are limited, but the upgrade positions Apple’s flagship devices for enhanced AI capabilities.
